He held her in his arms for one last time before she turned and walked away, knowing it was silly to feel this way. Certainly, he would see her again, And even though his feelings would not change; he could not turn back the hands of time to the place where she loved him.

All the memories he had of them together  – of laughter and tears, joys and sorrows are in another lifetime now. He had thought for a long time that the Rite of Malsuraan was one of the hardest things he had to endure. That was until this day when he knew  He would carry the burden of those memories always. She would never know how much he loved her and never remember how much she had loved him.

He wished with all his heart that he could tell her everything that had happen in the lifetime they spent aboard the Odyssey. That lifetime that was forgotten by all but him.

He knew it was time for her to move on, But the Pegasus galaxy seemed so distant, just as his dreams of Jaffa being free had once been all those years ago.

And it was time for him to move on also. Knowing all this still did not stop the pain in his heart at seeing her leave. What he wouldn’t give for one more chance to say ‘I love you’ to her.

As they walked together to the Stargate, he felt like his heart would never be the same again. The only comfort he could gain was from the fact that this time he had a chance to say goodbye. Unlike when he left Chulak years ago never saying goodbye to his wife or child. He looked on as the others said their goodbyes, and then watched her disappear through the vortex and on to her new life in Atlantis.

With a heavy heart, he returned to his room on base. Then, when the door closed, he finally said the one thing that he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) say to her when he said goodbye. “Samantha Carter, I love you.”

Looking around the room and feeling a bit foolish for having said it out loud, he turned and started lighting candles. Even though it was no longer necessary, he still found that kel’no’ream helped to calm his mind when it was troubled.

There was one thing he knew for sure: the SGC would not be the same with out her.
